Aluminium 5083 is widely used in many industries due to its main properties of high strength, corrosion resistance and ability to withstand extreme temperatures. It is the reliability and high durability of the material that makes the alloy so popular.
The chemical composition of aluminum alloy 5083 is – 4.5% magnesium, 0.7% manganese, 0.15% chromium and 0.12% zinc. The material shall be prepared as follows.
- Melting: the individual raw materials are mixed in precise proportions and further processed. This process is carried out in furnaces where the raw materials are melted at high temperatures. During the smelting process, the aforementioned elements such as manganese and chromium are added to improve the quality of the alloy.
- Casting: after melting, the aluminium alloy is cast into a mould that is shaped specifically for the desired product. This process may include additional processing steps such as re-casting or rolling.
- Processing: after casting and cooling, aluminium alloy 5083 is further processed. This may include grinding, machining, welding and other modifications. Depending on the product to be created, different technologies and processes are used.
Aluminium 5083 has very good forming and welding properties, making it an ideal material for the manufacture of components for heavy industry. Due to its corrosion resistance, it is also used in the automotive industry and other industries where high demands on durability and longevity are made.
The material also copes well with temperature conditions, i.e. high heat and sub-zero temperatures. Nevertheless, it is necessary to take care of the material, we recommend using one of the surface treatments to maximize the life of the material and to always maintain 100% condition.
