Stainless steel 1.4104 (also known as AISI 430F) is a martensitic or sometimes ferritic stainless steel with approximately 16–18% chromium and an addition of sulphur to improve machinability. This modification makes the steel suitable for applications where easy and precise machining operations are required, such as the production of components on CNC machines. However, steel 1.4104 has lower corrosion resistance compared to other ferritic or austenitic alloys.
The production of this steel involves melting and alloying with chromium and sulphur, ensuring both moderate corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties alongside enhanced machinability. The sulphur content improves chip breakage, enabling faster and more efficient machining processes. Heat treatment includes tempering to maintain an optimal balance between strength and machinability.
Stainless steel 1.4104 is primarily used in the manufacture of precise mechanical components, such as screws, shafts, gears, and fittings. Its easy machinability and sufficient strength make it ideal for mass production, particularly in the automotive industry and the production of industrial equipment. It is best suited for environments with lower humidity or mild corrosive exposure.
