Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a thermoplastic polyester known for its high strength, rigidity, and resistance to chemicals and moisture. PET is widely used for packaging materials, particularly plastic bottles, due to its light weight, transparency, and ability to maintain hygienic conditions for food and beverages. It is also highly recyclable, making it a more environmentally friendly option compared to some other plastics.
The production of PET involves a reaction between terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. The material can be further processed through methods such as injection moulding, blow moulding, or extrusion. PET is easily formable and, due to its strength and low gas permeability, is ideal for packaging applications requiring long product shelf life.
In addition to the packaging industry, PET is used for manufacturing textile fibres (commonly known as polyester), films, and technical components. Its recyclability and wide range of applications make it one of the most widely used plastics globally.
